Rivermania 2008 - Spirit of the River Celebration at Xa:ytem Interpretive Centre

The Spirit of the River Celebration, hosted by the Sto:lo First Nation, features cultural activities at the Xa:ytem Interpretive Centre and the Tiller’s Folly Concert in celebration of BC's 150th birthday!

From salmon to gold, furs to timber, the communities along the Fraser have been built on the richness given by the river. BC150 Rivermania's 36 days of community celebrations will honour the Fraser River and its Peoples. Situated on a hillside overlooking the Fraser River, Mission has always been a meeting place, first for the First Nations Peoples, missionaries, then for the agricultural, recreational and cultural communities of the Fraser Valley. The Sto:lo First Nation people have inhabited this area for over 9,000 years based on recent archaeological evidence of an ancient village site and "BC's oldest house."

Admission is free. There may be a nominal fee for some activities.

12:00pm – 6:00pm The Xa:ytem Interpretive Centre features a full day of activities including displays, mini-workshops such as mini-drum making, twining a cedar bracelet, fashioning a cedar rose, vendors, traditional games, rumming and singing, mini-pow wow, storytelling, and booths. A carver will be on site and there will be an Aboriginal art show in the artisan centre. The dinner will feature a traditional salmon feast as well as other First Nations fare. The evening activities will feature local First Nations bands, dancers, choral groups, and others.
