2010 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games
The Vancouver 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games present an unprecedented opportunity to showcase British Columbia’s unique and diverse Aboriginal tourism experiences to the world.
ATBC is working with the Four Host First Nations, VANOC, Tourism BC and others, to maximize the tourism potential of the Games for Aboriginal tourism entrepreneurs and communities throughout British Columbia.
ATBC’s 2010 Aboriginal Tourism Plan will create a sustained legacy of Aboriginal benefits – economic, social, cultural and environmental – through tourism involvement in the Games.
Goals
- Maximize awareness of BC’s unique First Nations tourism experiences and promote authentic cross-cultural learning.
- Position Aboriginal tourism in the marketplace as an integral part of Canada’s tourism portfolio.
- Training, job creation and capacity building by assisting Aboriginal tourism businesses and communities capitalize on all Games-related tourism economic opportunities.
- Accelerate growth and use of Aboriginal cultural tourism products, services and trained workers.
Key strategies leading up to, during and after the Games include:
- Ensure media relations activities feature and promote the diversity of the First Nations in BC.
- Develop and promote a list of Aboriginal tourism businesses suited to conduct 2010-related work.
- Support the Four Host Nations through the Aboriginal pavilion and Cultural Journeys program.
- Tourism training and skills development programs to assist Aboriginal people and communities capitalize on tourism opportunities.
- Facilitate access to media and tourism-related opportunities for other Canadian First Nations.
- Work with VANOC to develop appropriate protocols regarding the use and procurement of Aboriginal cultural goods and services.
- Identify opportunities for Aboriginal people to participate in the 2010 LegaciesNow program.

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will be held on the traditional and shared territories of the Lil’wat, Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations..
